A choreography in a birdīs eye view
- 20 self-glowing objects placed in the city
StillAlive
-The Man as the Place
is a project where 20 selfglowing objects are placed outside in
different places
in the architecture of the city. The object are placed both where they easily can be seen and in more hidden
places. In the night they glow.
The outplacement ritual and the objects journey in the city becomes a choreography in a bird's perspective.
The places where the objects will be placed are coordinates for a time.
Will the objects dissolve, dematerialize or be taken care of by passers-by?
The projects meets its audience in the public space.
In the same time it differs from traditional public art as it will only be present temporarily
and who ever finds them can pick them up and become owners of the
object.
If you find one of the objects you
can detect an ingraved link and then go to the website of the project
for more information about the project, how it continues and find instructions how to become a godfather.
Impressions from a visitor at the installation and out placing ritual at Weld in October 2008 :
The darkness embraced me . I tried to feel the steps with my feet in order to make my way down to the floor of the
basement where around 30 mysterious figures were glowing weakly.
By the time I reached the floor my eyes started to get used to the darkness.
The seemingly shapeless glowing figures showed to be small human beings made of plaster.
They all looked the same and seemed to seek safety in a fetal
position of the body. I walked around among them as they became clearer and clearer to me. Soon a sensation of
tenderness arose in me.
The silence and the darkness that surrounded the single individuals gave a calm atmosphere in the room. At the same
time the figures expressed a vulnerability that they tried to protect themselves from.
As visitors of this exhibition we were ask to sit down on the benches along one side of the room. The strong feeling that
the figures on the floor expressed reunited the audience in a shared silence.
After a while there were sounds from different sides of the room. Some groups of shadows gathered in the dark. Suddenly
one of the groups dissolved and spread in the room. Each one crouching with a bag bent over a figure and wrapped it in
a peace of cloth and placed with tenderness the figure in the bag. With soft and gentle movements they then silently left
the room.
When the first group was ready another group started to do the same ritual. Soon the room was almost empty except for
a few figures.
After a while the lights were turned on and the spell was broken, but the strong sensation was still there. We were given
a new reminder of our vulnerability as human beings and the importance to seek comfort in each other.
